Today’s wedding etiquette lesson from Celeste Sterling!

Cutting out
You think it’s okay to make and appearance, eat something at the reception, then disappear?
Nope.
It’s not.
This is the most special day in your friend’s life. Buy into it and enjoy! Savor the moment with your friends and family. Make some memories!
And before you leave, always speak to the bride and groom and to the hostess, thanking them for inviting you to be a part of their very special day.

Celeste Sterling is located in the Palmetto Peddlers Antique Mall, here in Florence, SC. They have gifts for your bridal needs, including but not limited to cake knives, toasting goblets, tussey holders, cake plateaus, silver bridal registry, etc.

DON’T DO IT (even if your buddies egg you on…)

As we deal in weddings on a regular basis, I will be sharing many of the “wedding tips” that Celeste Sterling is posting.

“If you’re the groom.
And it’s time to cut the cake.
DO NOT SMEAR CAKE IN YOUR BRIDE’S FACE.
The cake cutting ceremony is a long-time tradition that symbolizes the years that both of you will dedicate to nurturing (feeding) each other. If either of you smears cake in the other’s face, it says to the world that you are mocking the commitment you have just made.”

Let Them Eat Cake! Plays by the Rules!

Hello cake family!

An issue has come to our attention that we want to take some time to address.

We LOVE all of the amazing cake ideas you give us on a daily basis.  We are constantly being challenged and pushed to our decorative limits and love every second of it.  But we need to talk about something we CAN’T do.

Many times, we get requests for specific “character” themed cakes, for example, Mickey Mouse, other Disney characters, Thomas the Tank Engine, Spongebob Square Pants, Hello Kitty, and the list goes on and on.  Here lies the issue:  these “characters” are trademarked by their companies.  If a local shop duplicates their trademarked character, AND MAKES MONEY ON IT, the local shop is infringing on the main company’s trademark, and that is illegal.  I’ve heard of cake shops that have been sued for between $30,000 and $150,000 for trademark infringement.  And that, my friends is a scary thought.

You may have seen character cake pans and things of this nature for sale in baking stores.  Those are for PERSONAL use only and not for the purpose of making money.

That being said, we at Let Them Eat Cake! do not want to do anything that is infringing on another company’s trademark rights to their characters.  We strive to be a respectable business and we always want to stay within the legal parameters of what we do.

So, what CAN we do and still be within the boundaries of the law???

Let’s say, for example, you want a Spongebob themed cake.  We can go one of three routes:

1.  We can purchase a license from Nickelodeon that would allow us to recreate their trademarked characters (which is expensive);

2.  We can get EXPRESS WRITTEN permission from the company (ie. Contract) to produce the cake (this process must be started no later than 3 months prior to the event); or

3.  You can purchase Nickelodeon-produced figurines and put them on a basic sea-themed cake that we create. I have posted a picture as an example.  However, we CANNOT make the Nickelodeon characters in our shop.

So, all that being said, we CAN make your party cake, but we can not make the characters themselves out of cake materials, nor can we paint them onto a cake.  We hope you understand where we are coming from.  We are educating ourselves on this matter and want our customers to be educated on this as well.  Have we done it in the past?  Sure have.  When I was making cakes out of my house for friends, I didn’t know any better and made a few character cakes, some of which you may have seen in the past.  But once I discovered that it was illegal, I stopped.  That is why those pictures have been removed from Facebook and my photo albums.

Here are a few other cakes that we have done within the legal boundaries:

Now that we all know this, let’s get creative and make an AWESOME cake!!!

Under Construction

Hey royal cake subjects!!!

GOOD NEWS!  Construction is underway at the Let Them Eat Cake! shop!!!

Here’s what we’ve got going on right now.  The painting will be done this weekend, the flooring will be laid down early next week, and then we will start bringing in our equipment.  Also, our really awesome Let Them Eat Cake! sign for the outside of the building has been ordered.

We’re so excited about the progress!  We are predicting that we’ll be opening our doors to the new shop sometime near the end of September.

Keep checking this page and our facebook page for updates on the exact opening date.  Oh and we are planning a grand opening party, so be on the lookout for details about that too!

Have a cake-tastic day!

ICES Convention, Charlotte NC

Hello royal cake subjects!

For those of you who are big cake junkies, you will LOVE this post!

Today I am going to tell you about the Cake Queen’s journey to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend the ICES Convention.

(Fun fact:  Charlotte’s nickname is “The Queen City”….HOW APPROPRIATE!)

ICES (International Cake Exploration Societe) is an organization composed of over 4,000 sugar artists, cake decorators and vendors from all over the world.  These pictures were taken from this year’s convention.

The Queen was very excited to meet Norman Davis.  You may recognize him from competitions on Ultimate Cake Off or from any number of cake challenges on The Food Network.  He subbed as emcee for part of the cake challenge.  The Queen of Cakes met him first thing Saturday morning and then interacted with him again later at the cake challenge, where he directed the conversation to her several times!  How neat!

The Queen thought Kerry Vincent was a delightful person to talk with!  Her reputation is royalty in the cake world.  Many of you may recall watching her judge the Food Network Cake Challenges.  Google her work…her detail in decorating is spot on!

The Cake Queen also had the pleasure of meeting Jay Qualls.  Not only is Jay a talented decorator, but he is also a very entertaining person.  The Queen sat right in front of him at the cake challenge and he kept her laughing with his bantering.  Turns out, he went to MTSU, the university in Tennessee that Queen’s son (and my brother) Andrew attends.  Behind him is Dana Herbert.  You may recognize both gentlemen from The Next Great Cake Baker on TLC.

Susan Carberry - Let Them Eat Cake!

This cake was made by Susan Carberry.  Back in the spring of 2010, when the Queen couldn’t find local classes teaching cake art, she discovered Susan via the all powerful internet!  She had created a series of teaching DVDs through which the Queen began her journey.  The Queen will always be thankful for all she has learned through Susan’s willingness to share her passion.

Here are some other pictures from the ICES Convention.

Hope you enjoyed reading about the Cake Queen’s experiences at the Convention!  We already can’t wait for next year!

Let Them Eat Cake!

Hello everyone!

My name is Sarah Travis, daughter of the Queen of Cakes herself, Jackie Travis!  (I guess that would make me the princess of cakes?!)

I wanted to create a blog to showcase some of my mom’s amazing work.  I will be periodically bringing you updates on what is going on in the Cake Queen’s world, and also have the Queen write some entries too!  It’ll be neat to see cake through her eyes as the creator and my eyes as the TASTER!  :)

I’m really excited about getting this blog started up…and I even hope to incorporate a video component in the future.  Stay tuned!

Cheers,

Princess of Cakes
