Hello royal cake subjects!
For those of you who are big cake junkies, you will LOVE this post!
Today I am going to tell you about the Cake Queen’s journey to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend the ICES Convention.
(Fun fact: Charlotte’s nickname is “The Queen City”….HOW APPROPRIATE!)
ICES (International Cake Exploration Societe) is an organization composed of over 4,000 sugar artists, cake decorators and vendors from all over the world. These pictures were taken from this year’s convention.
The Queen was very excited to meet Norman Davis. You may recognize him from competitions on Ultimate Cake Off or from any number of cake challenges on The Food Network. He subbed as emcee for part of the cake challenge. The Queen of Cakes met him first thing Saturday morning and then interacted with him again later at the cake challenge, where he directed the conversation to her several times! How neat!
The Queen thought Kerry Vincent was a delightful person to talk with! Her reputation is royalty in the cake world. Many of you may recall watching her judge the Food Network Cake Challenges. Google her work…her detail in decorating is spot on!
The Cake Queen also had the pleasure of meeting Jay Qualls. Not only is Jay a talented decorator, but he is also a very entertaining person. The Queen sat right in front of him at the cake challenge and he kept her laughing with his bantering. Turns out, he went to MTSU, the university in Tennessee that Queen’s son (and my brother) Andrew attends. Behind him is Dana Herbert. You may recognize both gentlemen from The Next Great Cake Baker on TLC.
This cake was made by Susan Carberry. Back in the spring of 2010, when the Queen couldn’t find local classes teaching cake art, she discovered Susan via the all powerful internet! She had created a series of teaching DVDs through which the Queen began her journey. The Queen will always be thankful for all she has learned through Susan’s willingness to share her passion.
Here are some other pictures from the ICES Convention.
Hope you enjoyed reading about the Cake Queen’s experiences at the Convention! We already can’t wait for next year!
